Professional Tips
Every TIG welder eventually faces the choice: walk the cup, lay wire, or go freehand? Each technique has its place, and knowing when to use which one separates good welders from great ones.
Understanding the Three Main Techniques
Walking the Cup
Walking the cup means using the ceramic cup as a guide, resting it on the workpiece and "walking" it along the joint. This technique provides excellent stability and consistent gas coverage.
Freehand Welding
Pure freehand means no contact with the workpiece - you're controlling everything through hand position and movement. This is the most versatile but also most challenging technique.
Choosing the Right Technique for the Job
Thin materials (under 1/8"): Freehand or lay wire for heat control
Heavy materials (over 1/2"): Cup walking for consistency and speed
Remember
The best technique is the one that produces consistent, quality welds for your specific application. Versatility is what makes a professional welder.
Practice all three methods until you can choose the right one instinctively.
